The use of a clan or family crest in Japan developed among the nobility
between 800 and 1200 C.E.
· Crests often used plants, animals, and other elements of nature, such as
waves, mountains, and lightning, as symbols; some crests used religious
symbols, the heavenly bodies, weapons, coins, and tools.
· Because elements of nature had superstitious as well as symbolic
meanings, great care was taken in choosing a symbol for the family crest.
· The image of the crest may relate to possessions, occupations, or a
particular event that may have brought special honor to the family.
· Crests could also be chosen to memorialize a famous ancestor.
· During the feudal period, the imperial family, the warlords, and samurai
had their crests on banners, clothing, and swords.
· Crests continue to be used in Japan today. They can be found on store
logos, shopping bags, and dishes; in entryways of businesses; and as
pieces of jewelry.
